This Highway Almost Destroyed Toronto
In the 1950s Toronto wanted to build a network of “superhighways” all across the city. Part of this was the Spadina Expressway, which became one of the most controversial projects the the city's history. But most of this wasn’t built, and today, the city center is relatively free of highways, especially when compared to other major cities in North America.

They prioritize cars but they can’t even do that correctly. Due to stroads (a street and a road mix together) being the norm in cities, it creates traffic, confusion, and collisions. Streets are typically in residential areas with low speeds and roads are long stretches with high speeds. In most cities homes and businesses are right next to each other. There’s so many things to turn into such as parking lots or a driveway, cars are constantly going at high speeds to slow down with little warning to turn 24/7. This is adds on to pedestrians or bikers not being or feeling safe to commute. I live in Los Angeles and there’s plenty of bus stops in places where a sidewalk is non existent. Traveling out opened my eyes to how roads and streets are supposed to operate and it’s a smooth and traffic free ride every time cos how spaced out things are.

I live in the suburbs. Here is an idea, go rent an airbnb apartment in a big city. Let me know how you enjoy the blinding city lights, sirens at all hours, traffic noise, honking. Oh, but you have cafes and coffee houses nearby? So what. I make my own coffee and sit out on my porch overlooking the mountains in total peace and quiet. Some surburban areas are definitely better than others, and other areas, definitely suck.

This is all done on purpose so that the oil industry can benefit even more by people driving all the time and using gas. This is also the result of zero consequences for people breaking the law. If traffic violations had actual consequences, people would start obeying them. Speed limits. Stop signs. Etc. I'll use drunk driving as an example, if you're caught driving drunk, your license should be automatically suspended for 10 years. Second offense would be a lifetime ban for driving. Driving is a privilege, not a right. The vast majority of accidents are completely avoidable.

Truthfully, it’s unsafe in lots of big cities in the US for children. You have to worry about school shooting for crying out loud if you send your children to school. We want to foster independence in our children, but we will be homeschooling. While it would be nice for sidewalks, in our city there is a bad crime problem and we have a serious homelessness problem as well. The few sidewalks we do have in the city are so close to the road and drivers do not pay attention, so why risk losing your child? We will instead create a space for our children where they be outside and be independent but safe and close to home. We pray to one day own land for our children to explore (us as well as we enjoy that too and did that as children).

I live in a walkable area within my town in Ireland. There is infrastructure for bikes, local businesses not far off, safe streets and a sense of community in our suburb, allowing children to play unsupervised on the street and develop independence. There is a town square that is completely a pedestrian zone- in which loads of teenagers will go to hang out in and generally there’s no trouble. Several primary and secondary schools are very nearby and it is very handy. Traffic flows extremely well, in comparison to the car centric area I lived in before, where it took 30 minutes to do what should’ve been a 5 minute drive to school at busy times because there weren’t safe ways to walk in. The difference is astounding!

I dont go outside because of boys my age, im a minor and i dont feel safe because of the amount of boys who participate in inappropriate stuff (vaping, inappropriate jokes, etc) i once went out with my brother to a park (hes autistic) and 3 boys (from my age to a couple years older) came into the park and one of the boys whispered to me asking if he was autistic, pretty sure he meant it in a rude way. The boys then started mocking my brother. Like a couple months ago a boy i was friends with in primary invited to hang out with his friends and check out their 'forest base', the boys wanted me to say the n-word so i could 'join them' peer pressure and social anxiety got to me and i reluctantly said it. They trespassed and when they got caught they started making jokes about what they'd do to the owner of the property if they had a gun.

My whole life, i have lived in a Urban state (New York, to be a bit more specific, NYC), I'm still pretty young, I wont be saying my actually age bc no, but im close to the age of kids that most people think stay home all day, play fortnite, watch skibidi toilet, stuff like that. I've rarely left the public apartment I live in because theres no where to go that i could walk to that actual has other people there. There's a park near my home, but i have to be accompanied by my mom to go down because i live in a relatively dangerous neighborhood, and even when i do go to the park, there is rarely ever any other kids there to interact with because of how paranoid adults are to let kids go outside. And I can't just go anywhere else because even though I live in NYC, a place that is known for our subway systems, i still cant go out because I cant leave my apartment without my parents, and i dont have a card to pay for the ride. And I can't social at school because of us basically needing to sit down and shut up for 8 hours; having like, 20 minutes for lunch; and rarely ever having recess or gym. And with the popularity of tiktok or apps that can give ANYONE their 15 minutes of fame, that allows rude people to voice their opinions, get popular, and have people copying their behavior and taking in their ideas; so bullying is common and being rude is accepted; which makes many other kids like me, not want to interact and socialize, fearing we will be bullied and ostracized; so we just want to finish school as fast as we can, go home, and go on our phones and talk to people that relate to us. Many, if not all of my friends are online friends. People I'll likely never actually meet in real life, but people who understand, people who we want to talk to, and to talk to them, we must be on our phones. And also, as I mentioned earlier, i live in a Urban area, where there is no place that is kid-friendly, or a place we can hang out in; ranging from parks filled with dangerous crackheads and people who harrass minors, to having a lack of nature (trees, grass, lakes) to play in, to just straight up not being allowed to go anywhere because its not allowed for kids to go there (18+ places, places where you need to be accompanied, places that you aren't allowed to stand around in without getting a fine or being arrested). PS: I'm not sure how to add on from here, if i made any spelling mistakes or errors, let me know. This comment is from my own experience and based off of many of the kids I do talk to! ^^
